Abstract: As the global demand towards conventional fossil fuels is persistently increasing over the decades, exploring the potential of other sources of alternative energy is a crucial measure to have more diversified supply of energy and to anticipate unexpected scenarios where the availability of fossil fuels becomes uncertain as it cannot be equally distributed in order to satisfy the customers’ energy needs. This paper scrutinizes the contribution of renewable energy to the future global energy mix and the encountered challenges in energy development. When implementing renewable energy in our country, it has its own challenges due to the technological barriers among the other countries. However, it also gives benefits to the country itself when CO2 emission can be reduced and become more environmentally friendly, especially to society and ecology. The study was conducted based on Indonesia’s scenario, incorporating two specific examples of renewables namely, biofuel and geothermal energy. This paper further assesses the existing challenges associated with renewable energy development and the latest proposed solution to secure Indonesia’s energy supply. © School of Engineering, Taylor’s University.
